click for larger view This family with six children needed more space (natch), especially in the kitchen area. We moved the back wall out about six feet, providing enough area to create an island.
The kitchen was then opened up to the family room and an intermediate space for a dining nook was created between these adjoining spaces. To give each area its own identity, we used the ceiling treatment: the nook has an octagon of windows overhead, which lets in light from all directions. In addition, a large deck was added to extend the living space into the back yard.
